SANTO DOMINGO. – The Tourism Ministry asks the sectors interested in Puerto Plata’s tourism development to participate on Thursday in the public hearings on the reach of Decree 847-09 and advances of the Territorial Tourism Master Plan Cabarete 2015, aimed at eliminating the zone’s urban sprawl.

Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia said the decree regulates construction in Cabarete, where they’ll have to be built without jeopardizing the territory’s integrity, the characteristic urban landscape and natural resources and sports activities.

He said borders will be established in the regulatory Territorial Master Plan in each of that tourism zone’s environmental units, according to building suitability for vision and wind management criteria.

Paris.– The Dominican tourism representatives in France are taking part in the Mahana Trade show, a leading international event dedicated to travel and tourism on the theme “Culture and Heritage” at the Toulouse Exhibition Hall.

According to the organizing committee, the event, from February 5 to 7, offers a “journey in nearby and remote destinations.” Other counjtries participating are Tunisia, Indonesia, Reunion Island and Jordan.

Covering a 7000-square meter area, the show is expected to host 23,000 visitors including tours operators, airlines and shipping companies, travel trade members, corporate and business travel decision makers, leisure and holiday travelers, national and international representatives from the hospitality industry, as well as travel planners

The theme “Culture and Heritage” of the 2010 edition is chosen by the 2009 visitors (60%) including Mahana shows in Toulouse, Marseilles, Lyon and Lille, “even before beaches and nature.”

Punta Cana.– JetBlue will begin offering daily nonstop flights, year round, between Punta Cana and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, making golf vacations that much more convenient.

On May 8, the company will begin offering nonstop, Saturday flights between Punta Cana and Boston’s Logan International Airport.

To celebrate the new routes, JetBlue is offering these flights at $99 each way if booked by February 1 for travel between May 8 and June 12.

Throughout the certification and auditing process, the Barceló Punta Cana Resort made significant investments to ensure that the resort’s infrastructure met the highest environmental standards.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.- Dominican Government and Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representatives began to implement a sustainable tourism program in Puerto Plata, with the participation of the public and private sectors, to relaunch the country’s North coast as a tourism destination.

This 4 year program, to be set in motion with a US$3 million contribution by Japan’s Government, aims to benefit the zone’s communities through the development of tourist product and services using local resources, said the Economy Ministry in a statement.

“To combine efforts to motor Puerto Plata’s tourism development and confront the reduction of tourists since the mid 90s is the main joint goal which we must all undertake,” said JICA official Tadashi Ikeshiro.

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and extensive earthquake damage to neighboring Haiti, tourism authorities said through a press release.

The Dominican government is providing relief effort staging areas at some of the international airports located on the island. The country experienced no damage from the earthquake and all transportation systems, communication systems, tourism businesses and medical facilities are operating smoothly, making the country available to offer support to the relief effort in any way needed.
