SANTO DOMINGO.- Sun and beach tourism on its own is untenable as today’s traveler seeks more variety, and because it has lagged behind in developing communities, causing social exclusion, it doesn’t have a future in the Dominican Republic, said a senior adviser of the National Competitiveness Council.

Jaime Moreno said tourism should diversify so it can be competitive in the tourism market’s current reality. He acknowledged that the industry cames from an excluding process, most investment is foreign and operate as if they were a completely isolated ghetto within the social and environmental surroundings.

He said the problem of exclusion and degraded social life is present in almost all tourism models where the community isn’t included from the planning’s onset, and in turn spurs a lack of sustainability.
